The Demand for Biochar in the Agriculture Industry

Biochar is charcoal or high-carbon, the fine-grained residue produced via pyrolysis. Biochar is used as a soil conditioner and fed to animals. It is stable, solid, rich in carbon, and can abide in soil for thousands of years. Biochar offers multiple soil health benefits. It promotes good soil and plant health by reducing the leaching of E-Coli through sandy soils depending on application rate, feedstock, pyrolysis temperature (i.e., 300-700°C), soil moisture content, soil texture, and surface properties of the bacteria. It can improve yield for plants that require high potasium and elevated pH.

Biochar can enhance water quality and lower soil emissions of greenhouse gases, nutrient leaching, soil acidity, and irrigation and fertilizer requirements. Under specific circumstances, biochar induces plant systemic responses to foliar fungal diseases and improves plant responses to infections caused by soil-borne pathogens. These associated benefits of biochar boosted the demand for biochar in the agriculture industry. The Climate Hubs (the US Department of Agriculture) have established an online platform, 'The Pacific Northwest Biochar Atlas', that helps users choose biochar to suit soil health goals.

To use as a soil conditioner you will need to ACTIVATE YOUR BIOCHAR with microbes.  ActivFert Soil Life is an excellent inoculent as are your own compost teas.

Some of the key benefits of using Biochar as a fertiliser include signifigantly reducing run-off by increasing moisture retention, improving the efficiency of nitrogen use by plants resulting in increased yields and providing microbial housing in the soil.  Broad scale, use activated Biochar at 1t/Ha (or 1kg/m2) incorporating into soil where possible.  Application efficiency can be achieved in row crops by concentrating in the root zone. Can also be added to livestock feed and mineral mixes. Click here for more info.

Our biochar is made from sustainablly sourced hard Australian timber and is suitable for garden, crops, pasture and orchard use.

Available in BULK - half and full pallets. CONTACT US for bulk rates and freight quote.

Price listed is for 1L

20L Bucket is $48
